Lily loved to draw. One rainy day, she was at her grandma's house. 'What did you do for fun when you were little, Grandma?' Lily asked. Grandma smiled a warm, kind smile. 'Come with me,' she said. She took Lily to the dusty, old attic. In a corner, Grandma found a small, wooden box. Inside, on soft, blue velvet, were twelve beautiful, shiny pencils. 'These are magic pencils,' Grandma whispered. 'And now, they are for you.' Lily was so happy! She ran to her room with the magic box.

Lily took out a clean, white piece of paper. She picked the happy yellow pencil. 'I will draw a little chick,' she said. She drew a fluffy, round body and a tiny, orange beak. As she finished, the drawing moved. It blinked its little eye and chirped, 'Peep, peep!' A real, tiny, fluffy chick, as small as her thumb, hopped right off the paper! 'It is magic!' Lily gasped. She was so excited. She picked the shiny red pencil and drew a round red ball. Bo-ing! The ball bounced right off the page.

This was the best toy ever! Lily picked the deep-blue pencil. 'I will draw a beautiful butterfly,' she said. She drew big, blue wings. The butterfly fluttered, then flew off the paper. It flew all around her room. Lily laughed and drew all afternoon. She drew a little, green frog that went 'Ribbit!' and a sweet, red strawberry that she could really smell. She drew a silver key, and it became a real, cold key in her hand. These pencils could make anything she drew real.

Then, Lily had a very special idea. Her old cat, Marmalade, was always sleepy and did not like to play. Lily picked the orange pencil. She drew a tiny, playful orange kitten with big, green eyes. The kitten 'meowed' and pounced off the paper. Lily picked up the soft, warm, purring kitten. She brought it to Marmalade. The magic kitten pounced on Marmalade's tail. Marmalade woke up, and... he started to play back! Lily was so happy. She learned that the best magic is the kind you can share with your friends.
