Mia found a big green caterpillar in the backyard. It moved slowly along a leaf.
She ran inside and got a jar from the kitchen. She poked holes in the lid with a pencil.
I am going to keep it! she told her dad. It is so cool.
Dad knelt beside her. What do caterpillars eat? he asked.
Mia did not know. They looked it up together on a tablet. Caterpillars eat leaves!
Mia put some leaves in the jar. She watched the caterpillar munch and munch.
A week later, the caterpillar made a cocoon. It stayed still for many days.
Then one morning, a butterfly opened its wings inside the jar. Mia opened the lid and watched it fly free.
