At lunch on a Tuesday, in front of twelve people, Nina said something unkind about her best friend Cora's project — the one Cora had spent three weeks building. It was a model of a tidal power generator made entirely from cardboard and rubber bands, and Nina said it looked like something a kindergartner would make. Everyone at the table laughed.
Cora's face changed in a way Nina had never seen before. Not angry, exactly. More like something had been quietly broken. She picked up her lunch tray and moved to another table without saying anything.
Nina told herself it was just a joke. Cora was too sensitive. It wasn't a big deal. She thought this for approximately three hours before she admitted to herself, lying on her bed staring at the ceiling, that it had been unkind and she had known it was unkind when she said it.
The hard part was not knowing it was wrong. The hard part was that apologizing meant admitting, out loud, that she had chosen to be mean. That she had wanted the table to laugh more than she had wanted to protect her friend. That was a difficult truth to hold.
She called Cora that evening. Cora answered but didn't say anything, just waited. Nina had practiced what to say and all of it sounded hollow now. She started over. I said something cruel today because I wanted people to laugh. It wasn't true and it wasn't kind and I am genuinely sorry.
There was a long pause. Cora said, You really hurt my feelings. Nina said, I know. I'm sorry. Not as an explanation or a defense, just the two words, plain.
Cora did not immediately say it was okay, because it was not immediately okay. But she said, Thank you for calling. That meant a lot. They talked for another twenty minutes about other things, carefully, the way people do when they are beginning to mend something.
At school the next day, Nina sat with Cora at lunch. Nobody mentioned the day before. But Nina looked at the tidal generator model Cora had brought in for class and said, Actually, I think it's impressive. And she meant it. Cora smiled. Some apologies, Nina learned, are only the first step of a longer road.
