Jonah had never sung in front of anyone other than his mother, his bedroom mirror, and occasionally his confused golden retriever. When his music teacher announced that the city youth choir was holding open auditions, he spent three days pretending he had not heard the news.
It was his friend Bree who finally called him out. You want to go, she said, not as a question but as a fact. She had heard him singing in the hallway once, clearly not realizing anyone was near. You are really good, Jonah. You should do it.
He told himself he was only going to watch. He sat in the back of the community center and watched eleven other kids walk up to the piano, sing their sixteen bars, and receive a nod from the director. Some were technically perfect. A few were shaky but earnest.
When the volunteer called his name — he had not even remembered signing up on the clipboard by the door — Jonah's legs stood up before his brain gave permission. He walked to the front of the room as if watching himself from a distance.
The accompanist asked what he was singing. Jonah named the song he had practiced in his bedroom for two years, a folk melody his grandmother had taught him. The accompanist found it in her book and began to play.
For the first four notes, Jonah's voice felt thin and faraway. Then something shifted. He stopped watching himself from a distance and just — sang. He thought about his grandmother's kitchen, and Sunday mornings, and the way the song felt in his chest, not in his throat.
When he finished, the room was very quiet. The director made a note on her clipboard. Thank you, Jonah, she said. That was lovely. The word lovely landed somewhere in his ribcage and stayed there.
Two weeks later, a letter arrived in the mail. He had made the choir. Bree heard him shout from two houses away and came over immediately. His golden retriever, who had always been his most loyal audience, wagged his tail as if he had known all along.
