On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Juno was exploring her grandmother's dusty attic when she found an old rolled-up paper tucked inside a leather tube. She unrolled it carefully and discovered it was a hand-drawn map.
The map showed the garden, the old stone wall, and a dotted path leading to a spot marked with a red X. There were tiny drawings of trees and a compass rose in the corner. Juno's heart beat faster.
She showed it to her brother Felix. This could be a treasure map! he said, his eyes wide. It looks really old. Do you think Grandma knows about it? Let's go look before the rain stops.
They pulled on their raincoats and followed the dotted path from the back door, past the rose bushes, along the stone wall, and through the gap in the hedge that led to the wild part of the garden.
The X on the map pointed to the base of the oldest oak tree. They dug carefully with a small shovel and hit something hard after just a few inches. It was a rusty tin box with a latch.
Inside the box were three things — a small brass compass, a bundle of letters tied with a ribbon, and a black-and-white photograph of a young girl standing in front of the same oak tree, smiling.
They brought the box inside and showed Grandma. Her eyes filled with tears. That is me, she whispered, pointing at the photograph. I buried this time capsule when I was eight years old. I had completely forgotten.
Grandma read the letters aloud. They were notes she had written to her future self, full of wishes and funny drawings. The whole family sat together listening, and Juno decided she would bury her own time capsule that very afternoon.
